Staff Development

Career Growth & Professional Development

Learning is one of our H&HS key success factors. We have a goal of 25 hours of training per year per career team member-a goal we often exceed. Last year, 88% of H&HS team members participated in at least one training class or activity to help them improve their skills.

Approximately 23% of our current team members have been promoted from positions within H&HS. Many others have gained skills and experience through H&HS and advanced into other positions at UCLA or with organizations in their chosen fields.

H&HS Programs

Team members benefit from numerous learning opportunities made available by H&HS including the following:

  • On-the-Job / Job-specific Training
Train onsite with H&HS managers or by attending classes at technical schools or other organizations.
  • UCLA Project SPELL – An ESL Program
Join UCLA Project SPELL (Students for Progress in Employee Language Learning) and learn English by being paired with a student-volunteer for weekly one-on-one tutoring and practice.
  • Computer Advancement Proficiency Series (CAPS)
Attend hands-on computer classes provided on-campus for a variety of widely-used software programs.
  • The H&HS Mentoring Program
Participants in this nine-month program meet for career guidance from their assigned mentor and attend workshops, field trips, and other activities where they develop career goals and learn practical skills such as resume writing and job interviewing. Visit the H&HS Mentoring Program website for more information.
  • The Professional Enrichment Program (PEP)
Leadership development and succession planning program for mid-level management. The program runs for 18-months during which time participants take a 360 assessment, have in-depth exposure to the core functions of H&HS and attend monthly information sessions and workshops lead by senior H&HS and UCLA Leaders for networking opportunities.
  • Senior Food Service Worker Certification Program (SFSW)
This ten-month program is designed to sharpen our Senior Food Service Workers’ basic culinary knowledge and develop the skills necessary to work as an Assistant Cook with UCLA Dining Services. The program includes a series of educational and training sessions held twice a month on paid release time. Download the flyer for more information.
  • The Student Hospitality Leadership Development Program (SHLDP)
Offered to current H&HS student team members, this program helps expand their knowledge of the many departments within the H&HS Division, with a strong focus on hospitality. The goal of the program is to increase student team member engagement with H&HS, as well as to make participants aware of potential hospitality careers at UCLA and beyond. Visit the SHLDP website for more information.

Volunteering Opportunities in the Community

Help give back to the community and join other UCLA employees in reading to children, volunteering at a local food bank, and much more.

  • Reading is Fundamental (RIF)
Employees visit local elementary schools and teach the importance of reading at early age by reading books to them and then giving the students a new book of their choice.
  • L.A. Food Bank
Every year, H&HS employees visit the L.A. Food Bank to help package food for those in need during the holidays. Food donations are also collected around the H&HS facilities.
